The History and Future of Immigration in America. Americans are locked into a debate over immigration and the role of immigrants in our society. Advocates of comprehensive reform argue that immigrants, documented or otherwise, enrich the United States, provide valuable services and participate in American civic life. Others, as a matter of national security, support strict enforcement, the building of walls and greater scrutiny of those seeking to enter the country. Realistically, immigration is an issue which can be bridged only through the political process. However, it seems, politicians today are unable or unwilling to compromise, and instead use the issue for partisan advantage.
